IDT Newsletter – October 2011 INSIDE:
EMOTIONAL IMAGERY In anticipation of next year’s IDT Conference (30 March – 1 April) the collection of potent imagery has begun. We would be very grateful if you could scan and email in any ‘drawings and writings’ that spontaneously arrive in session direct from the unconscious, or that you may discover in your surrounding environment. One of the special strengths of IDT is its capacity to access intuition, inspiration, insight and captivating imagery, whilst accommodating the attunements of age and gender.
IDT CONFERENCE 2012 30 March - 1 April We are very pleased to invite all IDT graduates to our fifth biennial conference to be held early next year at the wonderful Tauhara Conference Centre. This is a conference for IDT enthusiasts of all sorts. One of the outstanding features of IDT is its adaptability and application across an incredibly wide range of uses, so it’s going to be great to meet and find out about the interesting work different people are doing with IDT. By the time conference arrives, we will have achieved a remarkable 8,000 enrolments in IDT training. We look forward to welcoming those of you who are relatively new to IDT, and catching up with old friends. Your questions, insights and speculative thinking about IDT successes and possibilities are welcomed. PARTICIPATION The conference will be a mix of experiential workshops, case-work presentations, short discussion seminars updating your IDT theory-and-practice, specialty applications, current issues, whole group activities, information sharing, innovative IDT sessions, emotional imagery, and much more. This year there is no central conference theme (other than ‘IDT’ itself) so each presenter can share their current IDT interests and inspirations. Because most of the presentations will have a hands-on component, previous attendance at IDT’s Foundation Course is a pre-requisite. We’ll provide drawing boards, crayons, paper and normal session accessories. CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS You don’t have to be an expert to make a presentation. – It is your level of interest and enthusiasm for this way of working that we are looking for. This is a great opportunity for IDT practitioners to share and explore their IDT work in the safe and appreciative company of informed and interested peers. Presentations can take the form of:
We’ll provide white board, power-point facility, overhead projector, music system. Please keep your abstract no more than 300 words and no less than 100 words. In addition to the descriptive text, please give a clear title to your presentation; identify what sort of presentation you are proposing; give your name and contact details; provide a brief comment about when/where you did your IDT training and your current use of IDT; and what equipment you need for your presentation. Please ensure your proposal is clearly IDT-focussed. Note that we will issue a compilation of all abstracts to all participants, but as a low-cost conference, presenters must bring (at their own expense) any special equipment or presentation-related handouts they wish to distribute. Please email the office your proposed abstract and addenda by Monday 28 November 2011 VENUE The Tauhara Conference Centre (above Acacia Bay) is a stunning venue, well-known for its uplifting ambiance, lovely people, yummy food and great service. Those of you who have not been there before are in for a treat! We have booked the full venue facilities and will get back to you in due course about fees, programme, enrolments, travel, what to bring, etc. The Tauhara Conference Centre is at 60 Acacia Heights Drive (off Mapara Road), Acacia Bay, Taupo, New Zealand. If coming from Australia and further afield, you’ll need to transfer via Auckland, Palmerston North or Wellington. - Book early to secure a seat. TIMES Conference days are Friday 30 March to Sunday 1 April. Registration and settling into your rooms will start early Friday, with morning tea at 10.00am, and our Opening Session at 10.30am. Conference ends 2.30pm Sunday – lunch provided. ACCOMMODATION Tauhara provides 10 x 4-berth bunk-rooms, which we have booked for the Friday and Saturday nights, and will allocate on a “first-enrolled first-reserved” basis. If these are fully taken up (as they have in the past) or if you prefer to have your own room, then you’ll need to arrange your own accommodation elsewhere. Taupo Visitors Centre (Ph +64 7 376 0027) has motels listed (Taupo township is only a 10 minute drive from Tauhara). You can google up ‘NZ Holiday Homes and Baches’ for private listings if you want to stay with colleagues. Westerman Real Estate (Ph +64 7 378 6163) have also rented several private houses near by. The Great Lake Holiday Park (Ph 07 378 5159) has cabins 3km away on Acacia Bay Road, and you might be able to arrange private accommodation elsewhere at Tauhara itself. Note that you’ll need to arrange your own daily transport if staying off-site. ENROLMENTS This is a time to strengthen and enrich your IDT skills and awareness, expand your IDT enthusiasm, widen your IDT horizons, deepen your sense of self, soak in a hot-river wallow or walk the river edge, delight in glorious Easter weather, feast on superb food, enjoy the party night, argue the debate, have lots of IDT sessions, make plans, have a quiet time - a necessary luxury of self-care, environment, learning, good company and rejuvenation! This is going to be a great conference and we do hope you can come.
MASTER’S CLASS
This three-day intensive training focuses exclusively on IDT’s seven ‘levels of work’ (- four levels of issues intertwined with three levels of characteristic response). In addition to developing skill with helping the client safely ‘down and in’, we will work with the less familiar seven levels that move ‘up and out’.
Working at depth can collapse the client’s ego-strength, yet working at depth is a vital opportunity for the client. MASTERS CLASS – Wellington: October 6-8, and Christchurch: November 16-18
IDT-BASED SUPERVISION IDT uses the page to quickly reveal matters of projection, expectation, and counter-transference. By the end of this two-day workshop, participants will be able to recognise the presenting framework of supervisee development and opportunity, and be able to apply IDT to match the supervisee’s level of need and professional readiness. We will present the key elements of IDT-based supervision, review the nature of IDT contracts, and use the benefits of IDT practice to portray layers of parallel process. Different strategies for 1:1 supervision, supervisor-led groups, peer groups, and self-supervision will be reviewed. The workshop will provide practical IDT tools for managing our caseload, and we’ll be having lots of hands-on sessions - so please assemble and bring current client work from all therapeutic stages. IDT-BASED SUPERVISION (Unit 8) – Christchurch: October 27-28, and Auckland: November 7-8
USING IDT WITH CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS
IDT WITH CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS (Unit 4) – Hamilton: November 24-25, and Auckland: November 28-29
TEACHER TRAINING PATHWAY This year’s IDT Teacher-training programme (Foundation Course grade) is moving towards its final phases, and we can anticipate two more New Zealand teachers and three new Australian teachers in 2012. In addition, three existing NZ FOUNDATION course teachers are currently completing their Advanced Course grade of Teacher-training, which will ease the pressure on our Senior teachers and free them up for overseas work. As IDT goes international, the demand for teachers will continue to grow. Because Auckland has the biggest regional population in NZ, and generates three large Foundation Courses a year, we require two Auckland-based teachers. If this is of interest, please give us a call and we can send you a schedule of pre-requisite IDT training.
AGENCY-BASED TRAINING In-house staff training in IDT is a popular and cost-effective contract that we offer. IDT is regularly commissioned by service agencies to teach the IDT Foundation Course, as well as the Advanced Course and our special application workshops. The client-centred nature of IDT’s unique blend of imaging and writing offers great benefits when working cross-culturally, or with trauma and the young.
RESEARCH IDT is seeking to support research projects that can impartially assess the nature and consequences of using Interactive Drawing Therapy. Expressions of interest are invited from experienced university students and interested academic staff. Some funding support may be available.
IDT LICENSES In order to capitalise on the advantages of local knowledge, IDT is progressively selling exclusive licenses for suitable parties to operate their own local IDT Centre. In New Zealand this is for a whole-country master license, whereas in Australia (because of its much larger population) licences are offered on a state-by-state basis. In addition we have interest from China and South-East Asia, as well as from parts of Europe and North America - so these are exciting times for IDT.
